About Kentucky State University

Kentucky State University, also known as KSU and sometimes also referred to as KYSU, is a public university located in Frankfort, which is the state capital and the county seat of Franklin County, in the US state of Kentucky, with a population estimated at a number of more than 27 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 5th smallest state capital in USA. Frankfort is also the principal city of the Frankfort, Kentucky Micropolitan Statistical Area, which contains all of Franklin and Anderson counties.

KSU was chartered in 1886, and first opened its doors to students one year later, being originally known as State Normal School for Colored Persons. The institution gained university status in 1972, and one year later offered its first graduate programs. Kentucky State is an historically black university, more than half of its students body, today, being African-American.

The university is currently academically organized into 3 main colleges: College of Arts, Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, College of Mathematics, Sciences, Technology and Health and College of Professional Studies. According to Princeton Review, KSU is ''A Best Southeastern College'', and according to the U.S. News and World Report, it is ''America's Best Colleges 2007''.
